Underwater Treadmill
Do you want to try an underwater treadmill in the Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill area outside of a physical therapy clinic or college athletic training room? Supplement rehabilitation, relieve chronic pain, improve mobility or cognition, regain balance, and increase muscle mass and strength in both the lower and upper body – all with minimal risk of injury.
The HydroWorx Underwater Treadmill offers both assistance and resistance. Being immersed in water assists by offloading your body weight and reducing pressure and impact on your ankles, knees, hips, and back. It also provides constant, uniform resistance, allowing you to get more of a workout from a simple movement like walking!
Exercise your body and your brain! Know someone struggling with a neurological disorder (dementia, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, etc.) or cognitive decline? Water stimulates blood flow to the brain, which can improve brain function and help the elderly age in place!
Who can use it? The Short Answer is Anyone
- Rehab Great if you are recovering from fresh surgery or injury and your doctor only wants you at a certain weight bearing status. You can walk at 50% or 25% of your body weight while allowing better blood flow and body mechanics to help the healing process.
- Weight Loss If running or fast paced walking is limited due to your current weight, water can help you by taking that weight off of your joints. Keeping that stress off the body while you increase your metabolism, stamina and calorie burn through more exercise.
- Runners/Athletes Preparing for a big run, marathon/triathlon or IronMan competition? High volume training can be stressful on hips, knees, ankles and feet. Doing 1-2 days per week in water offloads some of the training stress on the body, allowing your conditioning to continue while giving the body recovery as well with decreased pressure on joints and an increase in circulation.
- Pregnancy Aquatic exercise can relieve back pain and decrease pressure from your baby bump. As weight gain progresses in pregnancy it can be difficult to continue fitness programs. Gentle walking on the underwater treadmill can help you keep your endurance, while decreasing the load on your body. Water pressure around your body can also help alleviate swelling in legs, feet and ankles.
How is it different than typical pool training?
This is an advanced underwater treadmill in an individual pool chamber that allows you to work with the resistance of the water or against it for strengthening, while maintaining proper body mechanics and precise offloading of weight that can be difficult in a regular pool.
Our pool is 94 degrees year round for optimal muscle activation and increase in circulation during your workout. Increased circulation can aid cognition as well as physical recovery.
The resistance jet in the unit allows water flow for both resistance training and postural assistance for those that need it. Add the massage hose to the jet and you have directed water to address areas of tension in muscles throughout the body without the pain associated with other deep tissue interventions.
